Carson City, NV - May 16, 2017
The Nevada Department of Education and the Nevada Division of Tourism today announced the winners of the “Discover Your Nevada,” essay contest.
The top essays were written by Michael Meerovich, an eighth grader at Discovery Charter School in Las Vegas and McKenna Jaques, an eighth grader at Oasis Academy in Fallon.
“We enjoyed teaming up with the Nevada Division of Tourism in an essay contest that encouraged creative writing,” said Steve Canavero, Ph.D., Superintendent of Public Instruction. “This annual contest sponsored by Nevada’s tourism industry encourages Nevada students to explore their own home state.”
Micheal wrote an essay about Lake Tahoe after watching the Godfather II movie shot on location. McKenna wrote an essay about a trip to Virginia City that made her notice the little details in life she had not paid attention to when she previously lived in a big city. For their efforts, Michael and McKenna have each earned a trip with a parent, teacher and a friend, along with a representative from the Nevada Division of Tourism, on a three-day field trip in Nevada.
The opportunity was open to all eighth grade students in the State. More than 160 entries were received. Essays were judged by a panel from the Nevada Departments of Education and Tourism.
NDE received essays that ranged from student adventures on the Las Vegas Strip, Lake Mead, Red Rock Canyon, Mount Charleston, Lake Tahoe, Carson City, Reno and Virginia City.
The public is asked to also “Discover Your Nevada” and contribute to the Field Trip Fund at the same time. Each time someone checks in to social media while traveling along any of the six pre-selected routes across Nevada, $1 will be contributed to the fund. Find the routes at www.discoveryournevada.com.
