In recognition of Nevada's Sesquicentennial, the 150th anniversary of Nevada's admission to the Union, the Nevada Department of Education participated in a year-long celebration of literacy entitled "Nevada Reads: Celebrating Literacy in 150 Schools."
Throughout Nevada's 150 celebration year, Governor Sandoval and Superintendent Erquiaga, along with members of the Governor's Cabinet, staff members from the Nevada Department of Education, members of the Nevada State Board of Education, and others honored the legacy of literacy by visiting 150 schools across the state. Each of these individuals modeled of literacy to Nevada's students by providing a powerful read-aloud experience. Each Nevada Reads book read in a classroom was written by a Nevada author.
